Many of you have commented about the post that disappeared yesterday. Dave, who happens to be one of my favorite bloggers, brought it to my attention that my case was very similar to the ones he sells in his shop. I have absolutely no intention of stealing his idea to sell for my profit, so I immediately took them down.
Luckily, today is a German holiday and we are relaxing at home for the day, so I decided it was time to design and sew a new small circular needle case. I based this one on the one I had made last year, only smaller, and I think it’s a great design. My double point case is exactly like mine from last year, just a bit smaller to fit in my carry-around knitting bag so that one remains the same.

This case has two different patterned pockets, one on either side and it ties closed. I’ve even been able to take pictures while sewing it and I’ve written up the directions, so these will be the ones for sale. Phew-what a morning!
I apologize to all of you who have written emails asking about the cases, I think I can finally get back to you. If you like these cases, email me. lolly_de(at)gmx(dot)de
I used my Seamstress Apron while sewing this morning and it was perfect. I was a little worried about putting my big scissors in the pocket, but even having to squat down on the floor to cut fabric quite a few times, nothing poked me at all. Linda, what a great idea!!

I’ve gone over to his store and I have to say, yes, it looks similar, however – it is such a BASIC design. It’s hard to believe there aren’t a million things out there that look just like this little square fabric envelope.
I’m glad the seamstress apron is working for you!

In my own defense, I’d like to make a comment. It was NOT my intention to get into a public display over this.
Back in May, I put one of my needle cases up online to show them for sale. I spent many hours and lots of fabric designing the final product. This is what they look like: http://cabincove.com/?p=202 Kimberly even posted in the comments that she was going to make one.
And a few days later, shows it on her site, and admits that she got it from me. Notice how she has the Velcro positioned EXACTLY in the same
directions as mine, as well as the shape of the flaps, and the matching fabric closures:

It’s fine if you want to create something for yourself. But once you take someone else’s design and create patterns from it, you are infringing on the original artists’ right to earn money from their creations.

And, at no point did I say you were stealing. I merely commented that they looked a lot like mine. That was your own conscience.

What great needle cases you have made Kimberly (as usual) – I love them. The seamstress apron is a fantastic idea – my Aunt and Grandmother would have found it incredibly helpful as they were both seamstresses
A quick note on the “other” subject: It seems to me that you have handled a difficult situation with class.

These new cases are absolutely fantastic.

I want to comment on the grace with which you have handled this situation. Your explanation of the reason for removing the previous post was matter-of-fact and not defensive. You did not attack Dave, but admitted the similarity and proceded to revert to one of your previous designs.
I, personally, think Dave’s comments here were a bit defensive, he may have gotten some grief from your ’supporters’, I couldn’t say.

I thought you handled this very well and were, in fact, very even-handed and diplomatic in your explanation of the situation. I look forward to seeing more of your designs in the future.

Lovely circular case–the fabric is just so pretty.

[...] Kimberly’s patterns for travelling knitting needle cases are also great for a beginner. They are intended for holding round needles and double pointed needles, and that’s what mine do, but I can think of a lot of other things a young girl could use them for. Click here for pictures of her cases. If you’re looking for a good starter sewing pattern complete with pictures, I recommend it. [...]

Gosh, what a tricky situation. And who isn’t to say that you haven’t both been ruled by logic in where to place flap, and velcro, etc, so that in the end the design is so similar.
I love your blog. Thank you for sharing.
