A while ago I made the most useful thing for all bagaholics. This is nothing new, in fact there are some great pictures and tutorials all over the place but you know me, I’m always one step behind. I decided that my purse was just a mess and changing purses almost every day to go to work and then to go out with the kids, I decided I needed to make something to help keep all my goods a bit better organized. I searched the net and found the coolest thing.
Say hello to my new new purse organizer.
Here she is all rolled up and ready to go in my purse.
I know there are plenty of tutorials already out there for this but because I wrote up the pattern for my own records I thought I would publish it here too. Linda, one of my best blogger buddies of all time, sent me some gorgeous fabric ages ago and I haven’t wanted to cut into it until now. (You know, I’m so careful using the good stuff, I don’t want any of it to go to waste) This just seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally use it.
I have the tutorial in PDF form, if you want it, leave me a comment or email me and I’ll send it to you. You can download it from here.
Please don’t leave any more comments asking for the tutorial unless you would like to thank me and leave your blog address-I love to see new crafty blogs.

I’ve seen that purse in real life and it is just great.

December 1st, 2006 at 9:55 pm
I’ve been making puppets from the sleeves of felted sweaters and have been planning on making a bunch of purses out of the bodies of the sweaters. The only thing wrong with that plan is that the purses are basically shapeless grocery sacks of fabric and there is no sense of organization. I would ***LOVE*** the PDF so that I could make the organizer and make it so much easier on myself to carry and switch between the felted purses. (I could also gift my mother and/or sister with an organizer and a couple of purses that way without feeling like I’m contributing to the decline of western civilization.)
December 2nd, 2006 at 12:31 am
Nice – would love the pattern. I keep thinking about making one of these…maybe its time!

Hi this is so fantastic! Would you please forward me the PDF for this pattern, thank you! Love it already! xx
December 18th, 2006 at 3:52 am
I know you’ve called it a “purse organizer” but for some reason my brain has it dubbed a “bag buddy”…
Anyways, it looks great and I’d love a copy of the PDF, please.
I was also wondering – to my eye, when it’s rolled up it looks like all it needs is a flap over the top and a well place strap to be a “purse in a pinch” after all, it already holds all the essential stuff! And boy are there times when I just have to run out the door with the important stuff (or just want to leave the diaper bag in the car – doesn’t work when I’ve thrown my 7 “key items” into the diaper bag loose tho…)
Looking forward to your pdf!
December 18th, 2006 at 5:52 am

My DIL was showing me a purse organizer that both she and her mother had purchased. Being the sewist that I am, I figured there had to be a tutorial for making a handy organizer. I found your website using Google. After having read the instructions, I made an organizer using a couple really stiff placemats. That saved the step of adding the interfacing. It turned out great. Thanks for sharing the instructions with everyone.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Thanks for the instructions. I decided to try and sew one for myself. I love it, especially since I could choose the material/patterns myself (unlike buying one). I’m not the best seamstress, but this was super easy. I loved mine so much, I’ve been making them for gifts. A little bit of time and $5 in material and I have a wonderful hand made gift.

Just stumbled on your blog whilst searching for knitting bag patterns. I am so thrilled with this pattern – it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!
A few weeks back, some friends & I were bemoaning the essentials we forget every time we change handbags(I’m in the UK) saying ‘wouldn’t it be great if we had an inner bag contining our essentials & you simply switch it from bag to bag!’
I found a few purchased ones which are horrendously expensive & neither as pretty nor as practical as yours!
I shall make a few of these to give to friends!
Thank you so much for sharing!
September 10th, 2009 at 3:27 am

May 22nd, 2010 at 2:47 pm
I’m sorry but I do not think your instructions are complete. You say cut 1 piece of each fabric (are there 2 fabrics? or is there a main fabric with a lining which 2 will be cut for the pocket and then a main fabric and lining which 2 will be cut for the back of the pocket?) However, I can’t see how cutting the front and back of the organizer pieces the same length of 8″ wide would work. I would think the back of the organizer would need to be at least 2″ taller (wider) than the front fabric (the one for the pockets) at least that is the way it looks in the photo. To be honest, I have not yet tried the pattern.
May 22nd, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Again, I have to apologize because I have now actually tried the pattern and can say that I misread it! OOPS! So sorry – it works like a dream! Thank you for making it available to us!
